Question 26430: How do you divide mixed numbers?
Answer by yhtong(11) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! as all we know, mix number is a b/c
for instance,
3 1/2
in this case, 3 is the whole number, 1 is the numerator of the fraction and 2 is the denominator of the fraction.
so the questions
(3 1/2)/4=
first change all mixed number to improper fraction.
formula is denominator*whole number+numerator.
2*3+1=7
so 7 will be the numerator. then it makes, 7/2(denominator still remains the same).
(7/2)/4
now, to divide fractions, you need to inverse the numerator of the rightmost equation which is 4 with the denominator. actually, 4 is equal to 4/1.
after you inverse it becomes 1/4 and the sign before the 1/4 is times(*)
it makes (7/2)*(1/4)
to multiply fractions, you have to multiply numerator with numerator and denominator with denominator.
which makes
(7*1)/(2*4)
=7/8
