You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the two fraction be x & y
:
"The sum of two fractions is 1."
x + y = 1
y = (1-x)
:
"one fraction is 3/8 greater than the other"
x + 3%2F8 = y
:
Replace y with (1-x)
x + 3%2F8 = (1-x)
Multiply equation by 8
8x + 3 = 8(1-x)
8x + 3 = 8 - 8x
8x + 8x = 8 - 3
16x = 5
x = 5%2F16 is the 1st fraction
then
y = 11%2F16 is the 2nd fraction (must add up to 1)
:
Note the difference is 6%2F16 which is 3%2F8
