Question 1170494: Evalute 1/2+1/8+3/16÷5/8+3/16

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The way you wrote it, using no parentheses at all, the PEMDAS rule
says that you mean this:

1%2F2%2B1%2F8%2B3%2F16÷5%2F8%2B3%2F16

where we do the division 3%2F16÷5%2F8 first, then change it
to multiplication by the reciprocal of the second as 3%2F16×8%2F5
where when we cancel we get 3%2F10
So we replace the 3%2F16÷5%2F8 by 3%2F10 and now we have:

1%2F2%2B1%2F8%2B3%2F10%2B3%2F16

and the LCD is 80, so we have

40%2F80%2B10%2F80%2B24%2F80%2B15%2F80

We add the numerators and put it over the LCD as

89%2F80 or 1%269%2F80

------------------------------------------------------

But you may have forgotten about parentheses and ignored the PEMDAS rule
and meant this instead:

%281%2F2%2B1%2F8%2B3%2F16%29÷%285%2F8%2B3%2F16%29

If so we get LCD of 16 on the left and right

%288%2F16%2B2%2F16%2B3%2F16%29÷%2810%2F16%2B3%2F16%29

13%2F16÷13%2F16

We know that when we divide a number by itself we get 1

or we can invert the second and multiply:

13%2F16×16%2F13

and after canceling, we get 1.

So if you ignored PEMDAS and parentheses, the answer is 1.
