percent means per 100.
anytime you multiply something by a percent, you have to divide by 100 as well.
50% of 1 = 50 * 1 / 100 = .5
it doesn't matter if you divide by 100 first or later.
the answer will be the same.
50% of 1 = 50 / 100 * 1 = .5
the decimal equivalent of percent is defined as the percent divided by 100%.
the decimal equivalent of 50% is therefore equal to 50% / 100% = .5
your problem says to find 66 and 2/3 percent of 39.
that means (66 and 2/3) * 39 / 100, or:
(66 and 2/3) / 100 * 39
let's do the first way first:
(66 and 2/3) * 39 / 100 equals [(66 * 39) + (2/3) * 39)] / 100
at this point you would probably use your calculator to get 2600 / 100 which results in 26.
let's do the second way next:
(66 and 2/3) / 100 * 39 can be done using your calculator again to get:
66.666666666..... / 100 * 39 which is equal to 26.
just remembe that per cent means per 100.
anytime you multiply something by a percent, you have to also divide by 100.
75% of 100 = 75 * 100 / 100 = 75
you should also remember that 5 2/3 is equal to (5 + 2/3)
the parentheses is important if the percent is negative.
-5 2/3 is equal to -(5 + 2/3) which is equal to -5 - 2/3.
