If a formal algebraic solution is not required, try this quick and easy method for solving 2-part "mixture" problems like this:

You are mixing 20% copper with 70% copper to get 60% copper.
60% is 40/50 = 4/5 of the way from 20% to 70%. (picture the three percentages on a number line, if it helps....)
That means 4/5 of the mixture is the higher percentage alloy.

ANSWER: 4/5 of 80kg, or 64kg, of 70% copper; the other 16kg of 20% copper.

CHECK:
.70(64)+.20(16) = 44.8+3.2 = 48
.60(80) = 48

Question 1172831: Trevor and Marissa together have 26 T-shirts to sell. If Marissa has 6 fewer T-shirts than Trevor, find how many T-shirts Trevor has. Use x as your variable.

Answer by ikleyn(52788) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.

    x + y = 26     (1)  (x = # of T-shirts Trevor has to sell)

    x - y =  6     (2)

Add the equations and get

    2x     = 26 + 6 = 32;   x = 32/6 = 16.

Then from equation (1)  y = 26-16 = 10.

ANSWER. Trevor has 16 T-shirts; Marissda has 10.

Question 1025203: A metal alloy is 25% copper. Another metal alloy is 50% copper. How many grams of the 50% copper alloy should be used to make 1000 grams of a metal alloy that is 45% copper ?

Question:
A metal alloy is 25% copper. Another metal alloy is 50% copper. How many grams of the 50% copper alloy should be used to make 1000 grams of a metal alloy that is 45% copper ?

Solution:
The key to answering mixture problems is to calculate the weight of the pure components.
We know the total is 1000 grams, and 50% means 450 grams of pure copper.
Let x=weight of the 50% alloy, then
(1000-x)=weight of the 25% alloy.
Total weight of pure copper
=x(0.50)+(1000-x)(0.25) g
Since we know this weight must be 500 grams, so we equate and solve for x.
x(0.50)+(1000-x)(0.25) = 500
0.5x-0.25x+250=450
0.25x=450-250=200
means
x=200/0.25=800
Answer: 800 grams of the 50% copper alloy will be needed
(hence (1000-800)=200 grams of the 25% alloy.

Question 779489: Each pass through a lumber plane shaves off .015 inch of thickness from a board. How many times must a board originally
.875 inch thick, be run through the planer if a board of thickness .74 inch is desired.

Answer by josgarithmetic(39618) About Me  (Show Source):

Let c = count of runs through the planer. Thickness removed for c runs is 0.015c.
Thickness of board if starting 0.875 inches thick is 0.875-0.015c. Wanting the resulting thickness of the board to be 0.74, then makes the statement:
0.875-0.015c=0.74 and you would make a sensible judgement in case c is not a whole number.

What should the clearance between the bore diameter and the piston be if the linear coefficient of expansion per unit length (inch) per degree Farenheit is 0.0000124 for aluminum and 0.00000655 for cast iron when the temperature is 70 degrees F?
----------------
Al: alpha = 1.24E-5
FE: alpha = 6.55E-6
------
If the Al piston is 4 in diameter at 70F:
Its diameter at 160F = 4 + (160-70)*4*1.24E-5
= 4 + 446.4E-5 = 4 + 4.465E-3
= 4.004465 inches
--------------
If the bore is 4.003 at 70F, it changes to:
4.003 + 4.003*90*6.55E-6
= 4.003 + 2359.8E-6 = 4.003 + 2.36E-3
= 4.00536 inches
----------------
4.00536 - 4.004465 = 0.000895", less than 1/1000 of an inch.
------------------
In reality, the expansion of the bore hole in the solid block is more complex. The iron expands to make the bore larger, but the surrounding structure also contributes to "squeezing" the hole, so it's not a linear function.

Answer by josmiceli(19441) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First find the savings.
This is ( amount you would normally pay ) - ( amount you actually pay )
--------------------------
Then to find the percent savings,
% savings = ( savings ) / ( amount you you normally pay )
and multiply this fraction by 100
-------------------------
Let +c+ = normal cost of 5 items
savings = c - (3/5)*c
( note that (3/5)*c means customer only paid for 3 of the 5 items )
----------------
c - (3/5)*c = (2/5)*c
% savings = [( 2/5)*c / c ] x 100
The c's cancel
% savings = (2/5)x 100
% savings = 40
---------------------
If this is a little hard to follow, the most
important part is really
% savings = ( savings ) / ( amount you you normally pay )
then multiply by 100

putting in numbers may make it easier

3 items at $1.00 each, plus 2 free is 5 items for $3.00

5 items for $3.00 is $.60 each ($3.00 / 5)

the $.60 price is 60% of the $1.00 price [($.60 / $1.00) * 100%]

100% (full price) minus 60% (sale price) equals 40% savings

Question 414085: The electrical resistance of a wire varies directly as its length and inversely as the square of its diameter. If a wire with length 100cm and diameter 2 mm has a resistance of 1.5 Ohms, find the resistance of a wire with length 300cm and diameter 3mm.

I tried to find something similar to this in my textbook and couldn't. My guess was that the formula to use would be r=k(L/D^2), then solve for k which would be the constant. Once I have solved for k I can plug the new length and diameter into the formula and solve for r, am I on the right track?

---
r = k*L/d^2
---
Solve for "k" using "If a wire with length 100cm
and diameter 2 mm has a resistance of 1.5 Ohms".
----
1.5 = k*100/2^2
100k = 6
k = 0.06
-------
Equation for this problem:
r = 0.06*L/d^2
-------
Now "find the resistance of a wire with length 300cm and diameter 3mm".
r = 0.06*300/3^2
r = 0.06*100/3
r = 2 Ohms

Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the square root of 5z multiplied by the square root of 5 minus the squareroot of z
sqrt%285z%29+%2A+sqrt%285%29+-+sqrt%28z%29
:
I don't see an equal sign here so it is not an equation, we can try to simplify it.
sqrt%285%2A5z%29+-+sqrt%28z%29
which is
5sqrt%28z%29+-+1sqrt%28z%29
like terms,
4%2Asqrt%28z%29

Question 373910: A transformer has 200 primary windings ans 20 secondary windings. If the primary voltage is 10 V, find the secondary voltage.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A transformer has 200 primary windings and 20 secondary windings. If the primary voltage is 10 V, find the secondary voltage.
Sol'n:
Let: N1 - # of turns primary winding
N2 - # of turns secondary winding
V1 - voltage on primary winding
V2 - voltage on secondary winding
N1/N2 = V1/V2
V2 = V1(N2/N1)
V2 = 10(20/200)
V2 = 1 V ----ans.

..
let Antonio = x years
Precious = x-79
Antonio = x= 5* age of patrick
Patrick = x/5
..
Patrick = 1/2 age of Merlyn
2*patrick = Merlyn
2x/5= Merlyn
..
Ed = 2*(2x/5 + x/5)-30
Ed = 2*(3x/5)-30
Ed= 6x/5-30
...
now you have all their ages in variables
add them up
x+x-79+x/5 +2x/5 +6x/5-30 =271
2x+x/5 +2x/5+6x/5 = 271+79+30
(10x+x+2x+6x)/5 =380
19x=5*380
x= 5*380/19
x = 100 Antonio's age
Precious = Antonio's age -79
..
100-79 = 21
Precious is 21 years
