This is the formula that I came up with in answer to a word problem. I worked it out and came up with x=16. I then graphed it as a strait line by coming up with various points for y. The problem was sent back as needing to be revised. The equation and answer was fine. This is the comment they made:

To solve the equation graphically, notice that it is made up of two functions, y=4x-1 and y=3x+15.
The solution is at the intersection of these two lines.
Be sure to show the intersection on the graph.
Can anyone tell me how to do this, there are more problems like this coming up and I want to get them right the first time.

Question 140709: What similarities and differences do you see between functions and linear equations? Are all linear equations functions? Is there an instance when a linear equation is not a function?
The only similarities that I can find is that linear equations and functions have a x axis and an y axis. I have also found that not all linear equations are functions. I can not find anything about differences or an instance when a linear equation is not a function.
