Question 79214: Can anyone give me any insight into this? I'm stuck! Any help would be deepley appreciated. Thanks.

When using the quadratic formula to solve a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, the discriminant is b2 - 4ac. This discriminant can be positive, zero, or negative. (When the discriminant is negative, then we have the square root of a negative number. This is called an imaginary number, sqrt(-1) = i. )
Explain what the value of the discriminant means to the graph of y = ax2 + bx + c. Hint: Chose values of a, b and c to create a particular discriminant. Then, graph the corresponding equation

Question 79607: Does anyone have any idea what this problem means? Any help would be appreciated!
Suppose a baseball is shot up from the ground straight up with an initial velocity of 32 feet per second. A function can be created by expressing distance above the ground, s, as a function of time, t. This function is s = -16t2 + v0t + s0
• 16 represents ½g, the gravitational pull due to gravity (measured in feet per second 2).
• v0 is the initial velocity (how hard do you throw the object, measured in feet per second).
• s0 is the initial distance above ground (in feet). If you are standing on the ground, then s0 = 0.
a) What is the function that describes this problem?

Question 79676: Can anyone make any sense out of this problem? I don't understand at all the statements about calculus and/or how it would even look or where I would even begin. Any suggestions?
The perimeter = 2L +2W = 400 or L+W = 200
The area = LW so if you substitute for L you get (200-W)W = A
or A = 200W -W^2
If you're allowed to use calculus, you can show easily that the maximum
area occurs when W = 100 which, of course, means that L = 100 and you have a square plot.
If you can't use calculus, you can simply put in a value for W, calculate A, and keep trying until you find the maximum value for A.

• Search the Library and Internet. In the real world, where might these imaginary numbers be used?

ax2 + BX + C = 0

Move terms containing A to the left and the others to the right.

ax2 = - BX - C

ax2 = - (-XB+C)

Here Divide by X to isolate A.

-
A = + - (-XB+C)
2
X

ax2 + BX + C = 0

Solution

A = +- (-XB+C) ____

Question 79766: Use FOIL to multiply:
(4x – 9)(3x – 5)
As you should already know, FOIL means, first-outer-inner-last
multiply:
F means to first multiply First terms, which are 4x and 3x and it = 12x^2
O means to secondly multiply the Outer terms, which are 4x and -5 and it= -20x
I means to thirdly multiply the Inner terms, which are -9 and 3x and it= -27x
L means to lastly multiply the Last two terms, which are -9 and -5 and it= 45
Now you have come up with the solution, 12x^2-20x-27x+45 since you have two variables(-20x and -27x) that are alike you may add them together.
The outcome should be 12x^2-47x+45 is the solution to the product of those two binomials.
6. Multiply:
(x4 + 3x2 – 1)(x2 – x + 2) I am going to introduce to you the vertical method for this one.
In the vertical method, you simply multiply the equations as you would do any other math multiplication problem.(Set the problem up as if were a regular problem as demonstrated below):
x4+3x2-1
x2-x+2
---------
4x4+6x2-2
x5-3x3+1x
+ x6 +3x4-1x2
----------------------
x6+x5-3x3+x+7x4+5x2-2
this is your product. now all you have to do is put your equation in order from least to greatest by exponents in this case because sometimes its by varibles.
x6+x5+7x4-3x3+5x2+x-2
