Question 79676: Can anyone make any sense out of this problem? I don't understand at all the statements about calculus and/or how it would even look or where I would even begin. Any suggestions?
The perimeter = 2L +2W = 400 or L+W = 200
The area = LW so if you substitute for L you get (200-W)W = A
or A = 200W -W^2
If you're allowed to use calculus, you can show easily that the maximum
area occurs when W = 100 which, of course, means that L = 100 and you have a square plot.
If you can't use calculus, you can simply put in a value for W, calculate A, and keep trying until you find the maximum value for A.
