Question 851646: write an equation of the line. write the equation in the form x=a,y=b or y=mx+b. through (-4,1) perpendicular to y=-3x+1 y=-3x+1, y-1=(3x)x-(-4)) i know i do the reciprocal but it is not coming out the answer is y=1/3x+7/3 how did they get that

Hi,
Line through (-4,1) perpendicular to y=highlight%28-3%29x%2B1+, m = -3
***Using point-slope form, y+-+y%5B1%5D+=+m%28x+-+x%5B1%5D%29
+y+-1+=+highlight%281%2F3%29%28x%2B4%29 |Note the "negative reciprocal" of -3 is 1/3
y = (1/3)x + 4/3 + 3/3
y = (1/3)x + 7/3
