This equation is in y = mx + b form. b is the y-intercept 9literally where the grph hits the y axis). m is the slope (the speed, like mph)
So your graph y = 40x + 45 is the graph of a situation like "a car starts 45 feet from home. It speeds away at 40 miles per hour." And then that's it! There's no talking about when the car stops because lines are infinite. So, how do we graph it...
+45 is the y-intercept, so go 45 spaces up on the y-axis and put a point.
40 should be thought of as 40/1 (m=slope=speed= "starting at your y-intercept point, go up 40 and over 1, then put another point. Now connect the points with a line. You're done."
Million dollar challenge!: I challenge you to put 2 points on a piece of paper, draw a straight line connecting them and then draw a second, different, straight line conecting them. If you can't, it's ok. You only ever need 2 points to draw a straight line 9tell this to your teacher when he or she tells you to fill in a huge table of values!).

When the numbers are large, to keep from having too big a graph, mark off the
y-axis using bigger numbers than the way you mark off the x-axis:
Find the intercepts:
(0,45), and (0,-9%2F8) or (-1%261%2F8%29,0)
