Question 646777: If the line passing through the points (1, a) and (4, -2) is parallel to the line passing through the points (2, 8) and (-7, a + 4), what is the value of a?
Hi,
parellel lines have identical slopes
(1, a) and
(4, -2)
(2, 8) and
(-7, a + 4) |Multiplying thru by 9 so as all denominators = 1
-3(a+2) = 8-(a+4)
-3a - 6 = 8 -a - 4
-10 = 2a
-5 = a
and...
(1, -5) and
(4, -2) m = -3/-3 = 1
(2, 8) and
(-7, -1) m = 9/9 = 1
