Question 489952: d+7+2(d+7)+3d+d+1=182 i was tryin to help my niece with her work but its been awhile since i took algebra so yea... the question goes like this. five friends have 182 dvds.. dan has the fewest. donna has 7 more than dan betty has twice as many as donna jerry has 3 times as many dan and kenesha has 6 less than donna..

da + do + be + je + ke = 182
do = da + 7
be = 2*do
je = 3*da
ke = do-6

Substitute to get:
do-7 + do + (2do) + 3(do-7) + (do-6) = 182
---
8do -7-21-6 = 182
8do - 34 = 182
donna = 27
-----
dan = do-7 = 20
betty = 2do = 54
jerry = 3*20 = 60
kenesha = do-6 = 21

Let amount that Dan has be D
Then Donna has: D + 7
Then Betty has: 2(D + 7), or 2D + 14
Then Jerry has: 3D
Then Kenesha has: D + 7 - 6, or D + 1
Altogether they have 182 DVDs. Therefore, we will have:
D + D + 7 + 2D + 14 + 3D + D + 1 = 182
8D + 22 = 182
8D = 160
 , or 
D, or Dan's amount is: 
Donna's amount is: D + 7, or 20 + 7, or 
Betty's amount is: 2D + 14, or 2(20) + 14, or 
Jerry's amount is: 3D, or 3(20), or 
Kenesha's amount is: D + 1, or 20 + 1, or
