Question 377873: Hello! You are all wonderful and have been such a big help to me! Thank you so much for the work you do on this website!
I am trying to find out the slope intercept form of the equation of the line passing through these points (8,-6), (4,-2). I am using the formula y=mx+b. Thanks so much!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The points that are given to you are (8,-6) and (4,-2).
The equation is y=mx+b.
What you need to find is the slope, m and the y-intercept, b.

To find the slope, m, you use the formula:
m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29
So, m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29
m=%28-2-%28-6%29%29%2F%284-8%29
m=%284%29%2F%28-4%29
m=-1

Now from y=mx+b, we have y=-x+b.
To find the y-intercept, we can substitute one of the points in for x and y, and solve for b.

(4,-2)
y=-x+b
(-2)=-(4)+b
-2=-4+b
2=b

Now from y=-x+b, we have y=-x+2

I am trying to find out the slope intercept form of the equation of the line passing through these points (8,-6), (4,-2). I am using the formula y=mx+b.
----------
Slope m = diffy/diffx = (4/-4) = -1
Use y = mx + b and either point to find b
-6 = -1*8 + b
b = 2
-------
y = -x + 2
---------
The other tutor used diffx/diffy. That might give the correct answer for this one, but it's not correct in general.
