Function notation
if g(x) = -3x + 2, find g(5n) 

1. Look for the letter that is in the parentheses of the 
functional notation in the beginning.

That's x because the functional notation g(x) has an x in the
parentheses.

2. Look at what is in the parentheses of what you are to find

That's 5n because g(5n) is what you want to find and it has
5n in the parentheses.

3. Replace the letter in step 1 by what we found in step 2.

So we replace x by 5n in  g(x) = -3x + 2:
 

                         g(5n) = -3(5n) + 2

Simplify the right side:

                         g(5n) = -15n + 2
