Step 1: Graph the equation . Use a solid line because the inequality is rather than (if it had been , you would have graphed the equation with a dashed line).

Step 2: Select any point on the plane not on the line you just graphed. If the line does not pass through the origin, (and this one does not) the point (0,0) is an outstanding choice. Substitute the coordinate values from the point you selected into the original inequality.

If the result is a true statement, shade in the half plane on the side of the line containing the point selected.

If the result is a false statement, shade in the other side of the line.
