It appears that (*) is an operator.
x*5 = 4x - 2(5) = 4x - 10
3*4 = 4(3) - 2(4) = 4
So,
4x-10+=+4
add 10 to get
4x+=+14
divide by 4 to get
x+=+7%2F2
