From the 2nd equation we know we can substitute (8-5y) for x in the 1st equation
5(8-5y) + 2y = -29
Multiply what's inside the brackets
40 - 25y + 2y = -29
-23y = -29 - 40
-23y = -69
Multiply both sides by -1
23y = 69
y =
y = 3

Substitute 3 for y in the 2nd equation, find x
x = 8 - 5*(3)

x = 8 - 15
x = -7
