The sum of two consecutive integers is 37. Find the number.

Step 1. Let be the first integer.

Step 2. Let be the next consecutive integer

Step 3. Then since the their sum is 37.

Step 4. Solving the equation in Step 3 yields the following steps

Subtract 1 from both sides of the equation

Divide by 2 to both sides of the equation

and and note their sum is 37 as a check.

Step 5. ANSWER: The two consecutive integers are 18 and 19.
