Question 153231: I need help understanding how to determine this equation. I am trying to help my daughter with her worksheet, of course the school has not assigned text books yet (I asked for that also).
Month Average numbe of nightly visitors
Jan 32
Feb 25
Mar 12
Apr 17
May 10
Use the scatter plot that you made to find an equation that models the average number of nightly visitors as a function of the number of months since January.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Month/ Months after January/Average number of nightly visitors
Jan............ 0.......................32
Feb.............1...................... 25
Mar.............2...................... 12
Apr.............3...................... 17
May.............4...................... 10
Use the scatter plot that you made to find an equation that models the average number of nightly visitors as a function of the number of months since January.
------------------------
I entered the pairs of numbers into a TI-83 calculator; graphed a scatter plot;
then ran several Regression programs on the data to find the best fit.
------------------------
The best fit was the quartic equation y = -2.25x^4+175x^3-39.75x^2+17.5x+32-
Its r-value is 1; the r-values for linearReg, quadreg, cubreg are all less
than 1.
