Well, you have to add the values to get the distance.
To properly illustrate,

---- x ----- 0 ---- y ---------
-1/4 _______________________________3/5
Zero divides the #'s right?
So your distance will be x+ y as shown in the dotted lines.
To get x, -1/4 to 0 is 0.25+%28or+1%2F4%29 right?
For y, 0 to 3/5 = 0.60 or 3%2F5%29
Therefore, x%2BY+=+0.25%2B0.60=+0.85, or in fractions 1%2F4%2B3%2F5=17%2F20.
