You can put this solution on YOUR website!

given:
point (x%5B1%5D,y%5B1%5D)=(-4,4)
slope m=1%2F2
use point slope formula
y-y%5B1%5D=m%28x-x%5B1%5D%29
y-4=%281%2F2%29%28x-%28-4%29%29
y-4=%281%2F2%29%28x%2B4%29
y-4=%281%2F2%29x%2B2
y=%281%2F2%29x%2B2%2B4
y=%281%2F2%29x%2B6

The other tutor solved the problem using the point-slope formula:

y-y%281%29=m%28x-x%281%29%29

Apparently, today many algebra textbooks are not showing that formula, instead using the slope-intercept formula,

y=mx%2Bb

When I learned algebra many (many!) years ago, I learned the point-slope formula. But I now find using the slope-intercept formula is easier.

Plug the given value of the slope and the x and y coordinates of the given point into the formula and solve to find the value of b:

y=mx%2Bb
y=%281%2F2%29x%2Bb
4=%281%2F2%29%28-4%29%2Bb
4=-2%2Bb
6=b

The y-intercept b is 6, so

ANSWER: y=%281%2F2%29x%2B6
