You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
The Allen family and the Phillips family each used their sprinklers last summer.
The water output rate for the Allen family's sprinkler was 25L per hour.
The water output rate for the Phillips family's sprinkler was 30L per hour.
The families used their sprinklers for a combined total of 55 hours,
resulting in a total water output of 1550L. How long was each sprinkler used?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
x = Allen's family hours
Other family hours (55-x).
Total water output equation
    25x + 30*(55-x) = 1550  liters.
From the equation
    x = %281550-30%2A55%29%2F%2825-30%29 = 20.
ANSWER. A's family: 20 hours. P's family 55-20 = 35 hours.
CHECK.  20*25 + 35*30 = 1550 liters, total water output.   ! Correct !
