Question 1118608: Hi, I have a question here that I don't understand, could you give me the step by step problem solving method
"What is the slope of the segment shown for a staircase with 10 inch treads and 7.75 inch rises? As you walk up or down the stairs, your vertical distance from the floor is a linear function of your horizontal distance from the point on the floor where you started. Is the function discrete or continuous? Explain."
Thansk!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It's discrete.
You can't walk up 1/2 a step.
==============
Might also be discreet, depending on who's upstairs.

.
The slope is the ratio %28dy%2Fdx%29.

You are given dx = 10 inches and dy = 7.75 inches.

Hence, the slope is  %28dy%29%2F%28dx%29 = 7.75%2F10 = 0.775.

The linear function behind this problem is  y = m*x = 0.775*x.

Each linear function is continuous.
