You can put this solution on YOUR website!
find the equation of the line passing through P(4,-1) that is parallel to the line joining A(-5,2) and B(9,4). answer in general form
:
Find the slope of the line joining A & B (Since they are parallel, the other line has the same slope. m = %28y2+-+y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29
:
m = %28%284+-+2%29%29%2F%28%289+-%28-5%29%29%29 = 2%2F14%29%29 = 1%2F7 is the slope
:
Use point/slope form to find the line passing thru 4, 1. y - y1 = m(x-x1)
y - (-1) = 1%2F7(x - 4)
y + 1 = 1%2F7x - 4%2F7
y = 1%2F7x - 4%2F7 - 1
y = 1%2F7x - 4%2F7 - 7%2F7
y = 1%2F7x - 11%2F7 is the equation
But they want it in the general form
Get rid of the fractions, multiply equation by 7
7y = x - 11
-x + 7y = -1
or multiply by -1
x - 7y = 11 is the general form
