Question 1077660: The amount a spring will stretch varies directly with the mass attached to the spring. The spring stretches 12
cm when 8 kg is attached.
a. Create an equation that represents the relationship.
b. Create a labelled diagram of the relationship. Which variable is the dependent variable?
c. How far will it stretch when 11 kg is attached?
d. If a mass is attached to the spring and it stretches 42 cm, how much mass was there?
e. Why does it make sense that this relationship is direct variation?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! y=kx, where y is spring stretching in cm and x is weight in kg
12=8k
k=1.5
use that in next part
y=1.5*11=16.5cm.
42=1.5*x
x=28 kg
it makes sense there is direct variation, because increased weight causes increased stretch. The only concern one might have is whether it is exponential, but it is not.
