Question 1010162: Identify the slope and y intercept for each situation.
1. Shaniqua rented a bike from Trevor's Bikes. It cost $14 plus $3 per hour.
2. You are setting up your Netflix account for the month. It costs you $10 to get Netflix plus $0.75 per movie you rent.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1.
x = number of hours.
y = cost.
y = 3x + 14.

2.
x = number of movies.
y = cost
y = .75x + 10

if you rent the bike for 5 hours, then the cost is 3*5 + 14 = 15 + 14 = 29 dollars.

if you rent 5 movies in a month, then the cost if .75*5 + 10 = 3.75 + 10 = 13.75

the slope is coefficient of the x term.
the y-intercept is the constant term.

in problem number 1, the slope is the 3 dollars per hour and the y-intercept is the 14 dollars.

in problem number 2, the slope is the .75 per movie and the y-intercept is the 10 dollars.

the y-intercept is the value of y when the value of x is 0.

if he rents the bike for 3 dollars and hour and doesn't use it at all, it still costs him 14 dollars.

if he pays netflix for the month and never rents a movie, it still costs him 10 dollars.

if you grpah these equations, the graphs will look like this.

graph for the bike:

graph%28400%2C400%2C-10%2C10%2C-10%2C30%2C3x%2B14%29

graph for the netflix:

graph%28400%2C400%2C-10%2C10%2C-10%2C20%2C.75x%2B10%29

you would ignore the values on the graph when x is less than 0 because x can't be less than 0.
