We are going to use the pythagorean theorem.
take the slope of the line a/b
the slope is rise over run from 2 points.
it creates a right angle.
so the point a/b is used to find the distance.
a^2+b^2=c^2
c is the distance
The formula is rise^2 + run^2 = distance^2.

example:
There are 2 parallel lines. One line goes through the point (8,2}) and the other goes through the point (10,-6). Find the distance between the 2 lines.

First find the slope given the points.
The slope is .

Second use the pythagorean theorem.

Answer: The distance between the 2 lines is .
