3%284r-8%29=36....simplify, divide both sides by 3

3%284r-8%29%2F3=36%2F3

4r-8=12

4r-8%2B8=12%2B8

4r=20

4r%2F4=20%2F4

r=5

Expand:
12r - 24 = 36
12r - 24 + 24 = 36 + 24
12r = 60
12r / 12 = 60 / 12
r = 5
Or divide by 3 from both side
4r - 8 = 12
4r - 8 + 8 = 12 + 8

4r / 4 = 20 / 4
r = 5
