"1 less than 4 times the reciprocal of the number" is 4/x-1.
As the two expressions are equal, we have

Solving for x, we have

x%5E2%2B3x-4=0
%28x%2B4%29%28x-1%29=0
So
x=1 or x=-4
Therefore the number is 1 or -4.
