Question 187773: I need your help on solving an inequality. I know how to solve it but I don't understand the test points. For example:
x^2+6x<16
I know that the problem gets put in standard form
x^2+6x-16<0
and then it is factored
(x+8)(x-2)
then you set the factors equal to zero for the x intercepts
x+8=0 x=-8 and x-2=0 x=2
but I don't understand the test points
for example
(-2,8)
(-8,2)
(-8,-2)U (8,8)
(-8,-8)U (2,8)
please explain

Question 187797: hi, i have a lot of trouble with word problems and was wondering if you could help. here is the problem.
In your economics 101 class, you have scores of 68, 82, 87 and 89 on the first four of five tests. To get a grade of B, the average of the first five test scores must be greater than or equal to 80 and less than 90. Solve an inequality to find the range of the score that you need on the last test to get a B.
i did (68+82+87+89+x)/5 > 80 but i dont think that really helps..
thank you!

Question 188295: Can you help me solve this inequality? This is the question:
Option 1: C=_3x+32________________
Option 2: C=__6.50x_______________
How many hours would you have to rent the court so that the monthly cost of option 1, is less than option 2. Set up an inequality and show your work algebraically using the information in part a. Round to 3 decimal places if necessary.
This is what I have gotten so far:
32+3x<6.50x
-3x -3x
= 32<3.50x
32/3.50x<3.50x/3.50x

Question 189669: You recently started the paperwork to purchase your new home, and you were just notified that you can move into the house in 2 weeks. You decide to hire a moving company, but are unsure which company to choose. You search online and are interested in contacting two companies, Heavy Lifters and Quick Move, to discuss their rates. Heavy Lifting charges an $80 fee plus $35 per hour. Quick Move charges $55 per hour with no additional fees.
Which mover provides a better deal for 2 hours of work? How did you arrive at your answer? Heavy Lifting charge $80+$35h(2)=$150
Which mover provides a better deal for 15 hours of work? How did you arrive at your answer? Heavy Lifters charges $80 + $35h(15) = $605
For what values h (hours) does Quick Move offer the better deal? Express your answer as an inequality. Explain how you reached your answer.

Question 189807: The steps below supposedly solve the inequality x/(x − 2) > 2.
x > 2(x − 2)
x > 2x − 4
−x > −4
Solution: x < 4
It appears that all numbers less than 4 are solutions.
Give an example of a number less than 4 that is not a solution.
Why don't the steps shown give the correct solution?
