1%2F4x-1%2F8x=3-1%2F16x Multiply both sides of the equal sign by the LCD, (16x):
16x%281%2F4x-1%2F8x%29=16x%283-1%2F16x%29
16x%2F4x-16x%2F8x=48x-16x%2F16x
4-2=48x-1
2=48x-1
2%2B1=48x-1%2B1
3=48x
3%2F48=48x%2F48
1%2F16=x

1/4x-1/8x=3-1/16x
work the left side
1/4x-1/8x=1/8x
so
1/8x=3-1/16x
change subtracting to adding the negative
1/8x=3+-1/16x
add 1/16x to both sides(same as subtracting negative)
1/8x+1/16x=3/16x
so
3/16x=3
divide both sides by 3/16
x=16
