Question 255123: I was wondering how you turn a word problem into an algebra equation.
ex1.1.) The total receipts for a basketball game are $1400 for 788 tickets sold. Adults paid $2.50 for admission and students paid $1.25. How many of each kind of tickets were sold?
If x is how many of each kind of tickets were sold i was wondering how you put it in an equation.

Question 256851: The sum of three times a number and 7 more than the number is the same as the difference between -11 and twice the number. What is the number?
I have tried:
3x+7=-11-2x
3x+2x=-11-7
x=-18
This is wrong according to my instructor. The answer is actually supposed to be -3. How?
