Question 534419: Adding together two numbers is 20. Three times the smaller number is equal to two times the larger. Find the two numbers
Answer by oberobic(2304) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + y = 20
so
x = 20-y
.
3x = 2y
so
x = 2/3*y
.
x=x
so
20-y = 2/3*y
.
multiply both sides by 3
.
60 -3y = 2y
5y = 60
y = 12
.
x + y = 20
x = 8
.
Checking
3*8 = 2*12 ??
Yes
.
Answer: The two numbers are 8 and 12.
