Question 416267: Tim whitman has$4.50 in change in his desk drawer to use on the vending machines downstairs. He has four more quarters than dimes. He has 3 times as many nickels as dimes. How many of each type of coin does he have?
x=dimes
x+4=quarters
3x=nickels
x(.10)+ x(.25) + 4(.25) + 3x(.05) = 4.50
.10x + .25x + 1.00 + 3.05x = 4.50
I'm feeling this is wrong but I am not sure how to set the problem up.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

x(.10)+ x(.25) + 4(.25) + 3x(.05) = 4.50
=> .10x + .25x + 1.00 + .15x = 4.50
=> 0.50x = 3.50
=> x = 7
