Question 398127: Problem shown and given in class - I understand everything down to
x = 2/(1/40 - 1/45)*60 <--- How did they get 12 out of this? Please and thank you!
x = 12 miles
Foster drove to work on Monday at 40 mph and arrived one minute late. He left at the same time on Tuesday, drove at 45 mph, and arrived one minute early. How far does Foster drive to work?
40 mph = 2/3 mi/minute
45 mph = 3/4 mi/minute
The difference in time is 2 minutes
x/40 - x/45 = 2/60
x(1/40 - 1/45) = 2/60
x = 2/(1/40 - 1/45)*60
x = 12 miles

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Ok, starting with:
x+=+2%2F%28%281%2F40-1%2F45%29%2A60%29 Let's subtract the two fractions first:
1%2F40-1%2F45 The LCD is 360, so...
1%289%29%2F40%289%29+-+1%288%29%2F45%288%29+=+9%2F360-8%2F360=1%2F360 Ok so far? So we have...
x+=+2%2F%28%281%2F360%29%2A60%29
x+=+2%2F%281%2F6%29
x+=+2%2A6
x+=+12
Does this help?
