Question 364009: College student taking a refresher course after having not touched a math book in probably six years so I'm feeling a little dense.
Problem: "Find two consecutive whole numbers such that the smaller subtracted from five times the larger equals 57."
Teacher has explained these sorts of problems in the past, but I just don't understand any more what they're trying to tell me. Thanks for any help here.
Oh, and I can solve algebraic things easily enough, eg 2x + 5 = 72 or inequalities, w/e... the problem lies in getting to that point.

Let x = 1st whole number. Then x+1 = next whole number.
"5 times the larger" is 5(x+1). The smaller number is x, so the rest of the story is
5%28x%2B1%29+-+x+=+57. Think you can manage from here.
