Question 192339: From a worksheet:
Two objects weigh in at 2000kg. The heavier object is 240 less than 3 times the weight of the lighter object. How much does the heavier object weigh?
The answer is apparently 1440kg, however I have no idea how to reach this as sad as that may seem. The lighter object is what's throwing me.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let "x" = heavier object
and "y" = lighter object

First condition:
x%2By=2000kg. The 2 objects weigh in 2000kg

Second condition:
x=3y-240kg. The heavier object weighs 3 times the lighter less 240kg.

Putting 2nd condtn. to the 1st condtn.
highlight%283y-240%29%2By=2000
3y%2By=2000%2B240
4y=2240 ----> cross%284%29y%2Fcross%284%29=cross%282240%29560%2Fcross%284%29
red%28y=560kg%29. Weight of the lighter object

Via 2nd condt:
x=3%28red%28560%29%29-240kg
x=1680-240
red%28x=1440kg%29. Weight of heavier object (Answer)
