Let the average in December be "x" inches.
Then August average number is 3x + 1
--------------------------------------------------------------
The combined rainfall in August and December is 9.8 inches,
find the rainfall for each.
EQUATION:
x + 3x+1 = 9.8 inches
4x = 8.8 inches
x = 2.2 inches (amount in December)
3x+1 = 7.6 inches (amount in August)
