Smaller number = x

So larger number (5 more than twice the smaller) = 2x+5

The sum of the two numbers is 38:

x + (2x+5) = 38

Solve using basic algebra.

Then remember that the question asks for the larger number, which is 2x+5, not x.

Let larger number be L
Then smaller = 38 - L
Also, L = 2S + 5 ------ eq (i)
L = 2(38 - L) + 5 ------ Substituting 38 - L for S in eq (i)
L = 76 - 2L + 5
L + 2L = 76 + 5
3L = 81
L, or larger number = highlight_green%28matrix%281%2C3%2C+81%2F3%2C+%22=%22%2C+27%29%29
