In this video lesson I show how to find the equation of a line that passes through a given point and is perpendicular to a given line. I do this by using an example where a linear function and point are given. I plot the linear function, and mark the given point, showing what the line we are looking for should look like on the graph. First, I show how to find the slope of the desired line. If two lines are perpendicular, the product of their slopes is -1. Since we know one slope (from the given line) we can calculate the desired slope. Then we plug in the given point to finish finding the equation of this line. Finally, I graph the second line and show that it does pass through the given point, and it is perpendicular to the given line.
