Question 192737: Hi, I'm not sure if I should be in this section, but here I am. We are studying compound inequalities etc... in my class right now. My question is a word problem that I don't even know where to start. Can someone please help me?
The body mass index, I, can be used to determine an individual's risk of heart diease. An index of 25 indicates low risk. The body mass index is given by the formula, or model, I=700W/H^2, where W= weight and H = height, in inches. Francis weighs 189 pounds and stands 68 inches tall. What is his approximate body mass? Find an inequality describing all weights W that Francis can have and be in the low risk category. Thank-you for any help.

In order to acheive maximum results from aerobic exercise, one should maintain one's heart rate at a certain level. A twenty-five year old woman with a resting heart rate of 80 beats per minute should keep her heart rate between 149 and 172 beats per minute while exercising. She checks her pulse for 10 sec while exercising. What should the number of beats be? The number of beats in 10 sec should be between_and_ beats. Round to the nearest whole number. After basic math and now algebra that still confuses me :( Thank-you for your help.

Question 193065: I know this is a lot to ask but I really need some help. I don't get this at all.
1. Suppose you are in the market for a new home and are interested in a new housing community under construction in a different city.
a) The sales representative informs you that there are two floor plans still available, and that there are a total of 56 houses available. Use x to represent floor plan #1 and y to represent floor plan #2. Write an equation that illustrates the situation.
b) The sales representative later indicates that there are 3 times as many homes available with the second floor plan than the first. Write an equation that illustrates this situation. Use the same variables you used in part a.
c) Use the equations from part a and b of this exercise as a system of equations. Use substitution to determine how many of each type of floor plan is available. Describe the steps you used to solve the problem.
d) What are the intercepts of the equation from part a of this problem? What are the intercepts from part b of this problem? Where would the lines intersect if you solved the system by graphing?
Thank-you for any help you can be, I'd be grateful.
