Question 147109: I need help solving problems such as
3y -3 < 5y – 4
I start with 3y – 3 < 5y
I am never sure if I should subtract 5y from each side or subtract 3y from each side.
Then with 3 < 5y – 4
Do I add four on both sides or subtract 3 from each side?
I will get different answers depending on which way I go.
Can you help?
Thank you.

Question 147124: This Algebra is making me crazy. When solving by elimination method, I get mixed up, for example:
5x + 2y = -13
7x – 3y = 19
Do I find the common denominator for y? I would multiply the top equation by 3 and the bottom equation by 2.
3(5x + 2y) = 3 (-13)
2(7x – 3y) = 2 (19)
15x + 6y = -39
14x – 6y = 38
Do I add or subtract?
29x = -1 0r 1x =-1
x = -1/29 or x -1/1 or just -1
I know that whatever I get for x, I then replace the x in either of the first two equations to solve for y. I would then have the ordered pair for the solution to the system.
Thank you so much.

Question 147127: I am attempting to solve two equations using the substitution method.
x + y = 56 first equation
I have 3 times as many y as x, so I believe the next equation is
3x + y = 56
solve for y
y = -3x + 56 now in the first equation, I replace y with -3x + 56
x + -3x +56 =56
-2x + 56 -56 = 56 -56
-2x = 0? This can not be correct. Can you help me?
Thank you very much.

Question 147216: When solving a system of equations, how do I know what numbers to put in place of x and y? An example is:
2x – 6y = 42
3x – 9y = -15
I am to solve similar systems of equations but I do not understand what nubers to replace the variables with.
Can you help?

Question 147313: I am having trouble solving the system of equations by graphing.I can never seem to choose the right numbers to replace the variables with. For example:
2x - 6y = 42
3x - 9y = -15
I keep getting (8, -4) for the ordered pair but this in not correct. Can you help me figure this out please.

Question 147659: Hope someone can help me with this.
a. An financial advisor invested a total of $6,000, part at 4% annual simple interest and part at 6.5% annual simple interest.
The amount of interest earned for 1 year was $335.00. How much was invested at each rate? Show work.
b. Consider the equation 3x2 – 4x + 7 = 0.
1.Find the discriminant, b2 – 4ac, and then determine whether one real-number solution, two different real-number solutions, or two different imaginary-number solutions exist.
2. Use the quadratic formula to find the exact solutions of the equation. Show work.

Question 147707: I am attempting to solve an applied problem and having trouble setting it up.
Train A is traveling at 60 mph and train B is traveling at 80 mph, train A passes a bust stop at 7:25 AM and train B passes the bus stop at 7:40 AM, what time will B catch up with A?
Is this a situation where I find the slope
80-60/7:40 – 7:25 20/15
y-20= 20/15(x – 15)
y= 20/15x -20 +20
y=20/15x
I do not believe this is correct. Can you help me please?

Question 147891: When solving equations by graphing, I get confused if fractions are involved.
For example:
9x – 5y = 20 and
First equation
Let x = 0
-5y = 20
divide both sides by -5
y = -4
Let y = 0
9x = 20
Divide both sides by 9
X = 20/9 or 2 and 2/9
I would plot on a graph the two points
(0, -4)
(2 2/9, 0)
Second equation
5y – 9x = -20
Let x = 0
5y= -20
divide both sides by 5
y = -4
let y = 0
-9x = -20
Divide both sides by -9
x = -20/-9 or 20/9 or 2 2/9
I would plot on the graph the two pints
(0, -4) (2 2/9, 0)
Both equations are the same. Am I doing this correctly?
Thank you

Question 147911: Graphing an equation using the slope and intercept of y = 4/3x + 2
I know 4/3 is the slope and 2 is the y – intercept but I am not sure how to graph this. Is this as simple as graphing 4/3 or 1 1/3 on the x axis and 2 on the y axis? It seems to me there is a step I am missing.
If I keep at it, eventually I will get this Algebra stuff.
