Question 117914: FIND THE LENGTH OF EACH SIDE OF A RECTANGLE SO THAT IT HAS THE GIVEN PERIMETER.
2X-5 TOP
X SIDE

P=50 IN.

2x-5 = length
x = width
Perimeter = 2L + 2W
50 in = 2L + 2W
Plug in the algebraic expressions in terms of x for L & W:
50 = 2(2x-5) + 2(x)
50 = 4x -10 + 2x
Combine like terms
50 = 6x -10
Add 10 to both sides of the equation:
50+10 = 6x -10 + 10
60 = 6x
Divide both sides by 6 to get the value fo x.
60/6 = 6x/6
10 in = x (width)or (SIDE)

Plug this value into the equation for the top.
2(10) -5
20-5 =15 in (TOP)
