Question 926834: In the report "Expenditures on Children by Families," the U.S. Department of Agriculture projected the yearly child-rearing expenditures on children from birth through age 17. For a child born in 2010 to a two-parent middle-income family, the report estimated annual expenditures of $10,808 when the child is 6 years old, and $14,570 when the child is 15 years old.
(a) Using the above information, write the two ordered pairs of the form (child's age, annual expenditure). (Let c represent the child's age and y represent annual expenditure.)
(c, y) =
(c, y) =

(b) Assume the relationship between the child's age c and the annual expenditures y is linear. Use your answers to part (a) to write an equation in slope-intercept form that models this relationship.

(c) What are the projected child-rearing expenses when the child is 16 years old?

Question 927046: Hello,
First off thank you in advance for helping me. My teacher asked me to take this question home and turn it in the day before thanksgiving. This is what we are working on in school. Thanks again.
The slope of a line is m = 2/3. One of the points on the line is (4,-1). Find the equation of the line and present in slope-intercept form.

Why is it useful to write equations in slope-intercept form? What was the form that you used to find the initial equation? What do you need in order to find this equation, could you find an equation with just two points?

Question 929132: The height (in centimeters) of a candle is a linear function of the amount of time (in hours) it has been burning. When graphed, the function gives a line with a slope of −0.3. See the figure below.
http://i.gyazo.com/edc311720eb8262dac67f4dcc2eb3f86.png
Suppose that the height of the candle after 15 hours is 24.5 centimeters. What was the height of the candle after 8 hours?
- - -
I get that the question is asking for 8 hours after the start of the burning, not 23 hours, but I just don't understand how to apply the slope here.
