Question 946319: I want to know step by step on how to do this problem. The directions are find the slope- intercept form of the equations described. the problem is Write an equation for the line parallel to 5x=7+y and through the point (-1,-3)graph both lines

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve the given equation for y in terms of x, and identify the slope, which will be the coefficient on x.

5x=7%2By
5x-7=7%2By-7
5x-7=y
y=5x-7

Slope is 5.

Generally slope intercept form equation for a line is y=mx+b, and for a line parallel to a given line, the slope of the two lines are equal. YOUR line therefore will also have m=5, slope of 5.

You do not yet know the y-intercept, but you can solve for it as a formula from slope-intercept form of equation.

y=mx%2Bb
y-mx=mx%2Bb-mx
y-mx=b
b=y-mx

Find the value of b using the needed slope m=5, and the coordinate values (x,y) which are given in the point (-1,-3).

b=-3-%285%29%28-1%29
b=-3-%28-5%29
b=-3%2B5
b=2

Plug the values for b and m into the slope-intercept equation form and you will have the equation parallel to your given equation and passing through the given point.
