Question 901720: Hi I need help on this question please:
Write an equation of the line containing the given point and perpendicular to the given line. Express your answer in the form y=mx+b.
(3,4) 7x+y=12
I answered: y=1/7x+1
I just want to know if I'm right and If I'm wrong, will you please let me know how to solve the problem. Thanks a lot.

Hi
the standard slope-intercept form for an equation of a line is
y+=+highlight_green%28m%29x+%2B+highlight%28b%29 where m is the slope and b the y-intercept.
7x+y=12 0r y = -7x + 12, m = -7
New Perpendicular Line: m = (1/7)(negative reciprocal) -7%281%2F7%29+=+-1
***Using point-slope form, y+-+y%5B1%5D+=+m%28x+-+x%5B1%5D%29 P(3,4)
y - 4 = (1/7)(x-3)
y - 4 = (1/7)x -3/7
y - 4 = (1/7)x -3/7 + 28/7
y = (1/7)x + 25/7 +28%2F7+-+3%2F7+=+25%2F3
0r x - 7y = -25 In Standard Form
