Question 82269: I'm trying to find out the importance of Function Notation. I can't seem to find an answer anywhere that can explain to me the definition of function notation and the purpose of it. Is there anyway you can help me with this?

If you mean f(x), the purpose is to remind the user that he/she
is talking about the value that is associated with "x" and that
that value is unique.

One very important feature of function notation is that it allows you to immediately identify the independent variable in an equation.
For example, let's say that you have this quadratic equation:
in which y is the dependent variable and x is the independent variable, and you write it using function notation:

You can see right away that x is the independent variable because the x appears in the f(x). f(x) is read as "function of x" and not as "f times x"
