Question 807836: Hello, I need help understanding this math problem. Please help me if you can. Thank you
Write an equation of the line that is parallel to the given line
y = 2x + 3 and the given point (-4,1).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
By saying the unknown line is parallel to the
line +y+=+2x+%2B+3+ you are saying that it has
the same slope.
------------------
When the form of the equation is +y+=+m%2Ax+%2B+b+
as in this case, slope = +m+, so slope = +2+
-------------------
So far, you know your unknown equation looks like
+y+=+2x+%2B+b+
And, also it goes through the point (x,y) = (-4,1)
-----------------
Now I can plug in the x and y value of this point
+1+=+2%2A%28-4%29+%2B+b+
+1+=+-8+%2B+b+
+b+=+9+
--------------
So, the equation you are looking for is:
+y+=+2x+%2B+9+
-----------------
check:
does it go through (-4,1) ?
+1+=+2%2A%28-4%29+%2B+9+
+1+=+-8+%2B+9+
+1+=+1+
OK

Here's a plot of both lines:
