The distance of your friend can be written as:

where t is time in hours. At t=0 (when he was at his home), he was 75 miles from your home (this checks using the above equation). Then, for each hour that passes, he will be 55 miles further away from your home. Hence the above equation.
Your distance from your homes (I'm assuming you started from your home) is:
d%5B2%5D=+73t
At t=0, you were at 0 miles from your home (you were at home). Then, for each hour that passes, you will be 73 miles further away. Hence that equation.
