Multiply the first equation by -3. Notice that now the coefficients on x and y are identical between the two equations, but the constant term is different. That means that these two equations will graph to two separate parallel lines. The solution set of the system is the empty set because the lines never intersect. A system of equations is consistent if it has at least one solution. Since this system has no solutions it is said to be inconsistent.
