Question 190681: A quatdratic function has a Vertex at (-8,6). The function passes thru (-10,-8). When written in vertex form, the fuction is f(x) = a(x-h)^2+k, where:
a=( ? )
h=( -8 )
k=( 6 )
I understand the vertex = (h,k), I'm having trouble understanding how "a" is determined? Thanks in advance for your help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! A quatdratic function has a Vertex at (-8,6). The function passes thru (-10,-8). When written in vertex form, the fuction is f(x) = a(x-h)^2+k, where:
a=( ? )
h=( -8 )
k=( 6 )
I understand the vertex = (h,k), I'm having trouble understanding how "a" is determined?
-------------------
Substitute to get:
8 = a(-10+8)^2 + 6
8 = 4a+6
4a = 2
a = 1/2
